Abstract:
The 2009 project of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics and the Statistical Research and Training Center entitled "Broiler and Swine Information and Early Warning System (BSI-EWS)" was conducted to improve the livestock data system of the Bureau. This year, to gain a more in-depth replication of the data system of broiler and swine in Region 3, Region 4-A and Region 10 in the Philippines, early warning indicators were generated to serve as input variables in forecasting broiler and swine production in these top-producing regions. The project was also renamed to "Livestock and Poultry Information and Early Warning System (LPS-EWS)" to show focus on the database organization of other livestock and poultry commodities. The LPS-EWS was carried out mainly to enhance the appropriate methodologies developed in the BSI-EWS Phase I, II and III, and to expand EWS concepts to Regions 3, 4-A and 10. Nearly same conceptual, operational and organization frameworks in the BSI-EWS were adopted in this project. Specifically, the following were executed in this project: a) updating the supply and demand forecasting model for broiler meat and pork developed in the BSI-EWS project; b) producing “Broiler Situation and Outlook” and “Swine Situation Outlook” on a quarterly basis; c) improving database management of livestock and poultry commodities; c) updating the broiler and swine information database and its data system; and d) strengthening linkages with the private agribusinesses.
