Abstract:
In order to generate early warning indicators for food security, a research project has been implemented for about nine years now by the Philippine Statistics Authority in collaboration with Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute, and various agencies under the Department of Agriculture. The project, Livestock and Poultry Information and Early Warning System (LPI-EWS) has four core components: a) data generation b) data organization c) data analysis and forecasting and d) dissemination of products. These ensure a holistic approach in developing appropriate methodologies for efficient early warning system particularly for demand-supply of broiler meat and pork. One of the challenges encountered is the estimation of demand due to the reticence of the private sector in providing sales data that would have been the best variable to estimate demand. The paper shall present the procedures on how the supply and demand estimates have been developed and how it is now being used as indicators on food security through the release of Situation and Outlook Reports on broiler meat and pork, the project's end products. The S&O serves as valuable input to policy formulation and planning by the government and agribusiness sector.
