Scoping Study on Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries (Scouting Report)

Year: 2024
Author: Josefina V. Almeda, Ph.D., Roxanne Jean L. Elumbre, Jahaziel B. Rafael

Abstract:

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a universal call to action to address critical global challenges, including poverty, inequality, and climate change. Consequently, a comprehensive list of SDGs has been currently considered for implementation by various nations. One of the main focuses of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is SDG 10, which underlines the importance of mitigating disparities within and among countries. This goal, ratified by 193 UN member states in September 2015, delineates ten specific targets addressing various dimensions of inequality, including income disparities, social status, and access to opportunities (Kaltenborn et al., 2020). The pursuit of SDG 10 is particularly demanding, given the complex and pervasive nature of inequality, which has been on the rise globally. According to recent data, over 71 percent of the global population resides in countries where inequality has intensified (UNDESA, 2020). Hence, achieving SDG 10 requires a multifaceted approach involving coordinated policy measures, international cooperation, and innovative solutions to promote equitable growth and inclusivity across all sectors of society. This scoping study seeks to evaluate the progress of SDG 10 in the Philippines, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the country's efforts to combat inequality. It assesses the current data sources and methodologies, identifying critical gaps in measuring indicators. Moreover, the study recommends priority areas for further methodological research to enhance the effectiveness of policy measures and interventions. By providing tailored recommendations, this study contributes to the ongoing efforts of policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders in advancing SDG 10 and fostering a more equitable and inclusive society.
